The numbers 1-10 in Japanese have alternate kanji readings or pronunciations, which appear in certain vocabulary words depending on the context. such as when counting certain things, such as days, people, months etc. Please use the chart as a reference to better understand this concept.

Yorishiro (依り代)

Objects that attract or summon spirits while simultaneously providing them with a temporary residing place according to the Shinto belief system. 

Japanese people have believed that spirits reside in the evergreen tress and bamboo for thousands of years.
