The numbers 1-10 in Japanese have alternate kanji readings or pronunciations, which appear in certain vocabulary words depending on the context. such as when counting certain things, such as days, people, months etc. Please use the chart as a reference to better understand this concept.

三 | さん (san)、み (mi) | 三人 (sannin) [Three people] 三つ (mittsu) [Three items] |
四 | よん (yon)、し (shi)、よ (yo) | 四人 (yonnin) [Four people] 四月 (shigatsu) [April] 四時 (yoji) [4 o'clock] |
